San Francisco mayor says he convinced Trump in phone call not to surge federal agents to city

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie revealed in a recent interview that he successfully dissuaded President Trump from deploying federal agents to the city just months after reports surfaced about such a plan. The revelation came during a live appearance on "CBS Evening News" with anchor Tony Dokoupil.

According to Lurie, his conversation with Trump was brief but decisive. When asked how his call went, Lurie recounted that Trump's first question was "How's it going there?" before proceeding to discuss the proposed deployment of federal agents to San Francisco.

The plan had sparked concerns among local officials, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Lurie himself, who had pushed back against the idea, citing their city's efforts to address crime and homelessness issues. However, Trump later announced that he had scrapped the plan following a conversation with Lurie.

In his post on social media, the president credited "friends in the area" for advising him not to proceed with the surge, which Lurie believes was an attempt to emphasize the city's progress in addressing crime and improving economic indicators.

🤔 can you imagine being on a call with trump and getting him to back down from deploying federal agents in san francisco? 😂 lorie's story is kinda cool but also super frustrating - like, what were they even planning to do here that was so bad? 🤷‍♂️ the fact that they scrapped the plan just because of some convo with lorie makes me wonder if trump was really trying to address those issues or just look good in the eyes of his friends 🤦‍♂️ and on a side note, what's up with the way trumps talks? "how's it going there?" like what are you even talking about, dude? 😂

😅 so yeah I'm loving the idea of Trump being all chill like "how's it going there?" just casually asking about our city before diving into plans to deploy federal agents... that's like something out of a sitcom 📺🤣 but for real though, what's even crazier is how Lurie framed his conversation with Trump as this big save-the-day moment 💡 I mean, we all know Lurie's just doing some damage control here, trying to make himself look like the hero who talked Trump down from a ledge 🙏 at the same time though, it's kinda cool that our mayor was able to have a convo with the Prez and basically say "nah, you can't come in here" 👊 so yeah, I guess this is one way to show that even the most unlikely people can have civil conversations 🤝

Ugh, can't believe that homelessness is still a major issue in SF 🤕. And now we know that Trump almost deployed federal agents to try and "solve" it? Like, that's just gonna push more people into homelessness or make them less likely to come forward for help. And what's with the whole "how's it going there?" thing? Sounds like a total setup to get Trump to open up about his plan 🤔. Anyway, glad Lurie stepped in and spoke out against it, but I'm still worried about what'll happen next. Maybe SF can actually make some real progress on this stuff instead of just having politicians back and forth... 🤞

omg I'm still living under a rock 🌊, just saw this news about San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie stopping Trump from deploying federal agents... like what even is that 🤯? i remember back in 2019 when trump was all like "send in the feds" to deal with homelessness and crime, and now it seems like sf is getting a free pass 🙏. I wonder if luria's conversation with trumps was actually just a PR stunt 🤑... anyway, guess that's one less thing for san francisco to deal with 😌.

I gotta say, I'm relieved that Trump didn't go through with it 🙏... but at the same time, it feels like a pretty convenient storyline 🤔. I mean, Lurie just happened to have a call with Trump where he basically talked him out of deploying federal agents? That's an awfully neat narrative 📝... and what about all the other officials who were also pushing back on this plan? Did they not get any credit for their efforts? 🤷‍♂️ It feels like Lurie is being positioned as some kind of hero here, but it's hard to say if he was really that proactive in changing Trump's mind 💡.

omg i cant believe trump actually pulled back from deploying federal agents to SF!!! 🤯 i mean its crazy how much influence a mayor can have on a president lol. dan lurie seems like a total boss for speaking up against the plan, especially since there were so many concerns about it. i guess its true what they say - a conversation can really change things. and now trump is giving credit to "friends in the area" - idk if thats just code for "san francisco folks are doing better than expected" 🤔 anyway, glad no one had to get hurt or anything.

omg can u believe it 🤯 just that trump was gonna send in federal agents to SF but mayor lurie stepped in & stopped it lol good on him 👏 i mean its all about keeping the peace & being a good neighbor, right? plus who needs that kinda drama in their city? anyway gotta give props to lurie for being vocal & taking a stand 🙌

Can you believe it? Trump actually listened to reason this time 😂. I mean, who would've thought that San Francisco Mayor Lurie could talk some sense into him? The guy just dropped it like a hot potato after their chat 💁‍♂️. It's all about perception, right? He wants to look like he's supporting cities in addressing crime and homelessness issues, but really he's just trying to save face 🤔. Still, you gotta give Lurie props for being a straight shooter and having some serious influence over the prez 👊. Maybe this is a sign that Trump's getting wiser as he gets older? 🤷‍♂️

🤝 just heard about that 😲 san francisco mayor daniel lurie defused a possible situation 👮‍♂️ so grateful for civic leaders like him 💯 he listened to concerns & made it clear that federal agents weren't needed 🙅‍♂️ instead of escalating crime, they could help with homelessness & economy 🏠💼 yay progress over panic 🌈

I'M SO GLAD TO HEAR THAT SAN FRANCISCO WAS ABLE TO AVERT A POTENTIAL CATASTROPHE!!! 😌 IT'S AMAZING HOW ONE CONVERSATION CAN MAKE SUCH A BIG DIFFERENCE, RIGHT? 🤝 I MEAN, PRESIDENT TRUMP IS SUPPOSED TO BE ALL ABOUT MAKING BIG DEALS, BUT IN THIS CASE, HE LET SANTA FRANCISCO OFF THE HOOK! 🎅️ ANYWAY, IT'S AWESOME TO SEE LOCAL LEADERS LIKE MAYOR DANIEL LURIE SHINING WITH PRIDE AND SHOWING THAT THEY'RE NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK UP FOR THEIR CITY!!! 💪

omg u wont bliev wut jst hppnd!!! so therz dis mayor dan'l lurie frm san francisco n he had a convo w/ trump n trump wuz all set 2 deploy federal agents but luria just calmed him down lololol n now trump said he scrapped the plan lol n i think luria thinks trump just didnt wanna ruffle any fur in da city cuz we r doin bettr things w/ homelessness & crime lol i mean u can't blame ppl 4 tryna address da issues lol

🤗 just can't imagine how stressful that must've been for Mayor Lurie to have that convo with Trump 🤯 i mean, who gets asked how they're doing right before talking about deploying federal agents 😂 anyway, it's awesome that Lurie was able to talk sense into Trump and help prevent the deployment. that shows some serious diplomacy skills 💡

🤐 I've got some tea about this whole thing... so it sounds like Mayor Lurie had a serious chat with Trump and basically told him nope, we're good 🙅‍♂️. I'm not surprised, though - Lurie's been vocal about his stance on the issues, and it's clear he's got some influence. But what really got me is that Trump thinks Lurie was trying to spin the city's progress by saying they'd already made changes 📊. Like, dude, we get it, you're trying to save face, but come on... Lurie just said whatever it takes to get the federal agents out of our streets, and I'm good with that 😏.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this... so Trump was gonna send in federal agents to SF without even talking to the locals first? 🤯 I mean, I get it, he wants to show he's got power, but come on! Can't you just have a friendly convo with the people who actually live there? 😒 And now we're hearing that Lurie was able to dissuade him, which is great, but what exactly did they talk about? Was it just some generic "everything's fine" speech or was there actual substance to their conversation? 🤔

🤔 I think it's kinda weird that Trump just decided to cancel the plan on his own after talking to Lurie... I mean, he didn't actually make a decision together or anything? It seems like Lurie was more like a "please don't do this" kind of guy who got lucky 😅. Anyway, glad we dodged that bullet! San Francisco doesn't need more drama 🙅‍♂️. And can we talk about how Trump's convo with Lurie went from "How's it going?" to a full-blown discussion about federal agents? What even was the goal of that conversation again? 🤷

😊 so I'm thinking about this whole thing with President Trump and San Francisco... like what's really going on here? 🤔 I mean, it sounds suspiciously convenient that just when there were gonna be all these federal agents swooping in, they suddenly decided not to do it. Like, was Lurie just being super cool and diplomatic or is there something more to this whole story?

And can we talk about how President Trump's first question to Mayor Lurie was "How's it going there?" like what does that even mean? Is he trying to get a read on the city's vibe or is it just some weird icebreaker? 😅 And then they have this super brief conversation and suddenly everything gets resolved. It feels kinda... scripted.

I'm not buying the whole "progress" narrative either 🙄, like, what are they hiding? What's really going on with crime rates and homelessness in San Francisco? Is it all being swept under the rug because of this one little PR stunt? 🤔

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one 🤯... So basically, the Mayor of San Francisco (Daniel Lurie) had a chat with President Trump and apparently convinced him not to send in some federal agents to the city? That's wild, right? I mean, I can understand why local officials would be against it - we've been dealing with homelessness and crime issues here for ages. It's good that Mayor Lurie spoke up and had a conversation with the President, but I'm still wondering what exactly was said during those 5 minutes of their chat 😕...

I'M SHOCKED TRUMP COULD EVEN THINK OF DEPLOYING FEDERAL AGENTS TO SAN FRANCISCO!!! IT'S NOT LIKE WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH ISSUES IN THIS CITY ALREADY 😩🚫. I MEAN, COME ON, CRIME AND HOMELESSNESS ARE REAL PROBLEMS THAT NEED REAL SOLUTIONS, NOT SOME WILD GESTURE FROM THE WHITE HOUSE 🤦‍♂️. IT'S NICE TO SEE LURIE STEP IN AND SAVE THE DAY FOR US, THOUGH! 🙌

Trump thinks he's got friends now?

San Francisco is still the city that Trump can't figure out.
