Wolfspeed’s Double-Digit AI Growth Raises More Questions Than Answers
Wolfspeed, a semiconductor company specializing in silicon carbide technology, has seen its AI data center revenue surge. The latest quarterly results show that this revenue more than doubled year-over-year and increased by approximately 20% sequentially in Q4.
However, this growth comes with a caveat: Wolfspeed continues to rely heavily on cash injections from investors and debt financing. Despite having $1.09 billion in cash reserves as of June, the company reported a net loss of $145.4 million and an adjusted EBITDA loss of $62.4 million.
Wolfspeed’s financials highlight its ongoing reliance on external funding, which raises questions about the sustainability of its business model. The company’s efforts to diversify beyond electric vehicles (EVs) are also worth examining. Wolfspeed has invested heavily in developing silicon carbide technology for high-voltage data center systems, which could provide a lucrative new revenue stream as AI workloads continue to rise.
However, the company’s recent partnerships and product launches may not be enough to offset its manufacturing-economics problems. The non-GAAP gross margin remains negative at -20%, despite Wolfspeed’s claims that it has made significant strides in reducing debt and extending its financial runway.
The 2025 restructuring reduced debt by approximately 70% and annual cash interest expense by roughly 60%. However, these gains may not be sustainable if Wolfspeed continues to report losses. The company’s manufacturing-economics problem persists, and it faces ongoing dilution risk due to its convertible notes and warrants.
The conversion of $46 million in debt into equity during Q4 only adds to these concerns. As Wolfspeed looks to the future, it will need to address these fundamental issues if it wants to restore positive gross margins. The company’s first-quarter fiscal 2027 guidance calls for revenue between $140 million and $160 million, with non-GAAP gross margin expected to remain negative.
Wolfspeed’s investors would do well to remember that past performance is no guarantee of future success. As AI infrastructure continues to grow in importance, Wolfspeed finds itself at a critical juncture. The next few quarters will be telling in determining whether the company can leverage its silicon carbide technology to become a major player in this emerging market or continue to struggle with manufacturing-economics and dilution risk.

"Wolfspeed's astronomical growth rate is impressive, but let's not forget what drives this momentum: government incentives and subsidies for EV adoption. As these tailwinds fade, can Wolfspeed sustain its explosive revenue expansion without a significant shift in its business model? The company's heavy reliance on external funding and dubious EBITDA math raise more questions than answers about the long-term viability of its silicon carbide play."

Wolfspeed's rapid growth in AI data center revenue is great news for investors, but it masks underlying issues with their manufacturing economics. They've made strides in reducing debt, but it's unlikely to stick if they can't turn a profit soon. What's concerning is how heavily they're relying on debt financing and cash injections from investors. If the non-GAAP gross margin remains negative at -20%, it's hard to see where the sustainability lies. Wolfspeed needs to deliver on their promise of silicon carbide technology for data centers, or risk becoming a one-trick pony in the EV space.

Wolfspeed's growth might be impressive, but let's not forget that they're still burning through cash at an alarming rate. That $1.09 billion in reserves is being spent rapidly to keep up with investor demands and pay off debts. I'm worried about their manufacturing economics problem – it's like trying to sprint before you've even finished building your track. They need a solid financial foundation to support that rapid growth, or they'll be left wondering why they're losing steam.
