Beijing's No Fly Zone: A New Normal for Airspace Security? The establishment of a vast airspace security zone around Beijing is the latest example of China's growing obsession with control and surveillance in its skies.

The move follows a rare breach of Beijing's tightly controlled airspace, in which a small aircraft crashed into the city's tallest building in June.

The new "Special Restricted Area" covers an area roughly 280,000 square kilometers in size, encompassing not just Beijing but also several surrounding provinces and cities.
